Lacri-lube is an eye ointment that is predominantly used in the treatment of dry eye conditions. It is also used for corneal erosion, and to lubricate the eyes before eye surgery. It contains paraffin and wool alcohols (lanolin) which all serve to lubricate and protect the eyes from water loss, thereby relieving symptoms of dry eyes and forming a protective barrier on the eye’s surface.

Who is it for?

You can buy Lacri-lube for the self-treatment of dry eyes or you may be recommended or prescribed it by your doctor. It is a non-drug formulation and can be used safely and effectively by many people. It comes as an ointment, which can provide long-lasting relief from dry eyes.

How do I use it?

Lacri-lube is an eye ointment that comes in a tube. Wash your hands before applying the product to your eyes. Gently pull down the lower eyelid to produce a pocket between your lower lid and eye. Squeeze a small amount of Lacri-lube into this pocket ensuring the tip of the tube does not touch the eye. Let go of your lower eyelid and blink a few times to spread the ointment around the surface of the eye. Use as often as necessary into the affected eye(s).

Should anybody not take it?

Do not use Lacri-lube if you currently have an eye infection. You should avoid Lacri-lube if you have any allergies or sensitivity to paraffin or lanolin. If you wear contacts, remove them first before applying Lacri-lube, then wait at least 30 minutes before inserting your contacts again. If you need to use other eye drops alongside Lacri-lube then you should wait at least 5 minutes between applying all eye drops and ointments. Lacri-lube should be used as your last step.

Are there any side effects?

Lacri-lube is a greasy and occlusive ointment that can temporarily blur vision after administration. If this affects you, do not drive or operate heavy machinery. In some instances, you may have a sensitivity to the ingredients in Lacri-lube. If you experience redness, swelling, or pain in or around the eyes, stop using Lacri-lube and seek the advice of your doctor or pharmacist.
