Nexium 24HR tablets work by blocking acid directly at the source, giving you 24 hours of protection from frequent heartburn. Nexium is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI), and it works by shutting down the acid pump in your stomach. Nexium is also used to prevent ulcers in people who use nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).

Dosage

Read the directions and warnings before use:

Do not use if the seal under the bottle cap imprinted with "sealed for your protection" is broken or missing.

Adults 18 years and older: this product is to be used once a day (every 24 hours) for 14 days. May take 1 to 4 days for full effect before your reflux symptoms (e.g., heartburn and acid regurgitation) get better.
Children under 18 years of age: ask a doctor before use. This medicine should not be used by children and adolescents under 18 years of age without medical advice. Heartburn in children may sometimes be caused by a serious condition.
14-Day Course of Treatment: swallow ONE tablet whole with a glass of water before eating in the morning for 14 days. Do not crush or chew the tablets.
Do not take more than this recommended dose of one tablet (20 mg) a day, even if you don’t feel an improvement immediately.
Stop taking this medicine when your reflux symptoms have completely gone away.
Do not use for more than 14 days unless directed by your doctor.

Repeated 14-Day Courses (if needed). You may repeat a 14-day course every 4 months. Do not take for more than 14 days or more often than every 4 months unless directed by a doctor.

If your reflux symptoms get worse or do not improve after taking this medicine for 14 days in a row, you should consult a doctor.

Tips for Managing Heartburn

Avoid foods or drinks that are more likely to cause heartburn, such as rich, spicy, fatty, and fried foods, chocolate, caffeine, alcohol, and even some acidic fruits and vegetables.
Eat slowly and do not eat big meals.
Do not eat late at night or just before bedtime.
Do not lie flat or bend over soon after eating.
Raise the head of your bed.
Wear loose-fitting around your stomach.
If you are overweight, losing weight can help reduce symptoms.
If you smoke, quit smoking.

Ingredients

The active substance is esomeprazole. Each tablet contains 20 mg esomeprazole (as magnesium trihydrate).
The other ingredient(s) are Corn Starch, D&C Red No. 28, FD&C Blue No. 1, FD&C Red No. 40, Ferric Oxide, Gelatin, Glyceryl Monostearate, Hydroxypropyl Cellulose, Hypromellose, Magnesium Stearate, Methacrylic Acid Copolymer, Pharmaceutical Ink, Polysorbate 80, Sucrose, Talc, Titanium Dioxide, Triethyl Citrate.

Warnings and Restrictions

Read all product packaging and labels carefully prior to use.

Do not take if you have trouble or pain on swallowing food, vomiting with blood, or bloody or black stools.
Do not take if you have heartburn with light-headedness, sweating or dizziness, chest or shoulder pain with shortness of breath, or pain spreading to arms or neck.
Talk to your doctor or healthcare professional if you have severe kidney or liver problems before taking the medicine.
It is advised to carefully read all instructions on the label prior to use.

Talk to your doctor before taking Nexium if:

you have had a stomach ulcer or stomach surgery in the past
you have been taking reflux or heartburn treatment continuously for 4 or more weeks
you have jaundice (yellowing of skin or eyes) or severe liver problems
you have severe kidney problems
you are aged over 55 years and have new or recently changed reflux symptoms or need to take a non-prescription indigestion or heartburn remedy treatment every day
you have ever had a skin reaction after treatment with a medicine similar to Nexium that reduces stomach acid
you are due to have an endoscopy or a urea breath test
you are due to have a speciﬁc blood test (Chromogranin A)

Also ask a doctor before use if you have:

had heartburn for over 3 months; this may be a sign of a more serious condition.
frequent wheezing, particularly with heartburn
unexplained weight loss
nausea or vomiting
stomach pain

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

As a precautionary measure, you should avoid taking Nexium during pregnancy.

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.

Do not take Nexium if:

you are allergic to esomeprazole or any of the other ingredients of this medicine
you are taking or are allergic to medicines containing other proton pump inhibitors (e.g., pantoprazole, lansoprazole, rabeprazole, or omeprazole)
you are taking an H2 antagonist (e.g., ranitidine or famotidine)

Do not take this medicine if any of the above apply to you. If you are not sure, talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking this medicine.

Also do not take Nexium if you have:

trouble or pain swallowing food, vomiting with blood, or bloody or black stools
heartburn with light-headedness, sweating or dizziness
chest pain or shoulder pain with shortness of breath; sweating; pain spreading to arms, neck or shoulders; or light-headedness
frequent chest pain

These may be signs of a serious condition. See your doctor.

Taking other medicines

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any other medicines.

This is because this medicine can affect the way some medicines work and some medicines can have an effect on it.

Do not take this medicine if you are also taking a medicine containing nelﬁnavir (used to treat HIV infection).
You should specifically tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking medicines used to prevent blood clots, such as warfarin, clopidogrel or cilostazol (blood-thinning medicines).

Your doctor may adjust your dose of Nexium if you also have severe liver problems and are treated for a long period of time.

You may take this medicine with antacids (e.g., magaldrate, alginic acid, sodium bicarbonate, aluminum hydroxide, magnesium carbonate or combinations of these) if needed.

Also tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking any of the following medicines:

prescription antifungal or anti-yeast medicines such as ketoconazole and itraconazole (used to treat infections caused by a fungus)
voriconazole (used to treat infections caused by a fungus) and clarithromycin (used to treat infections)
erlotinib (used to treat cancer)
methotrexate (used to treat cancer and rheumatic disorders)
digoxin (used for heart problems)
prescription antiretrovirals (medicines for HIV infection) such atazanavir, saquinavir
citalopram, imipramine, or clomipramine (used to treat depression)
diazepam (used to treat anxiety, relax muscles, or in epilepsy)
phenytoin (used to treat epilepsy)
medicines that are used to thin your blood, such as warfarin; your doctor may need to monitor you when you start or stop taking Nexium
cilostazol (used to treat intermittent claudication – a condition where poor blood supply to the leg muscles causes pain and difficulty in walking)
cisapride (used for indigestion and heartburn)
rifampicin (used to treat tuberculosis)
tacrolimus (in cases of organ transplantation) or mycophenolate mofetil (immune system medicines)
St. John’s Wort (hypericum perforatum), used to treat depression
methotrexate (immune system medicine) also used as arthritis medicine)
